PHILIPS will replace the majority of the 125,000 existing street lights of Buenos Aires with new LED luminaires for which is granted a 3-year warranty. The new LED-based lighting will achieve over 50% of energy saving and a significant reduction of CO2 emissions every year. The lifetime of the street lamps is five times longer than of the previous conventional lighting which will reduce maintenance costs for the City of Buenos Aires remarkably.
PHILIPS praises its LED street lighting system enthusiastically as a “unique, flexible, sustainable and integrated lighting solution which was not even envisioned only a few years ago.” In fact the white light of LED lighting offers some outstanding advantages. It enables better facial recognition and a more adequate color perception, not only by the human eye, but also by security cameras which is supposed to strengthen crime prevention and public safety.
Another advantage of the LED street lighting is its ability to be remotely controlled. PHILIPS has developed an individual solution for the City of Buenos Aires based on its “Tele-management platform.” This system enables monitoring of each light point in the network on an individual basis. The operation and programming of each street lamp now becomes possible, which allows the planning of potential replacements or future maintenance tasks. The system finally provides the possibility to switch off or dim lighting levels, depending on specific requirements, thus dramatically reducing energy consumption.
The complete luminaire replacement process will take 3 years and is another landmark in the advancement of LED-light sources.
