Osram releases new LED with lateral light distribution16-03-2015
Osram has extended its Duris-series with a new packaged LED called Duris S2. The new LED has a size of 2.0 x 1.6mm and a middle-ranged output current of 65m. As Osram claims, the new LED can reach a luminous efficacy as hig as 160 LM per Watt and a colour rendering of at least Ra >80 to 85 with high colour stability. Such homogenous illumination is particularly important within LED tubes where even slight colour inconsistencies can be noted easily by the human eye..

The particular new feature about the Duris S2 is its unique packaging with a beam angle as wide as 150 degrees which differs strongly from the 120 degrees beam angle of common LEDs. The wide beam angle can be achieved through the usage of a new lead frame which is called “expoxy moulding compound” (EMC). Compared to common packing, EMC allows more light to be distributed laterally.

The small chip size is ideal for linear lighting solutions such as LED tubes. Due to the lateral light distribution of Duris S4 the well-known problem of dark light spots within linear applications like LED tubes can be avoided whilst the generated light can be used more efficiently. The latter allows an reduced mounting of SMDs which inevitably reduces production cost. As Osram claims, the new lead frame EMC-packaging allows the chip to have a life span of 50.000 hours compared to the only 35.000 hours life span of other LEDs of the Duris-series.

The new LED is still under testing and supposed to pass LM-80 certification of Energy Star not earlier than by the beginning of 2016.gm.
