St. Peter’s Square illuminated LED illumination12-01-2017
As Osram has released, the St. Peter’s Square in Rome has lately been equipped with new LED floodlights resulting in an enhanced lighting experience for visitors on the square.
Next to an improved illumination result, the unobtrusive integration of the lamps into the architecture played an important role. Naturally, energy consumption savings and ecological sustainability have been in the center of attention. The step had been taken after Osram’s LED illumination within the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican’s Palace had already received much valued recognition.

According to Osram, the Vatican had demanded an illumination levels of up to 120 lux during the night in order to guarantee the safety of visitors during evens and ceremonies and even to enable reading on the square. For the achievement of this aim a total of 132 LED floodlights has been installed which has resulted in a sufficient and homogenous illumination of the square.
As a matter of course the illumination of the square’s impressive architecture was another important focus of the lighting design. The new LED floodlights brilliantly illuminate the square’s architecture at a color temperature of 4.000K. Particularly the appearance of the square’s columns and the marble’s color have been enhanced by the new lighting. Equipped with DALI controllers, the new lamps are dimmable and have achieved impressive energy savings of 70%. Sm.
