Thorn Lighting cuts number of LED lamps at Hong Kong Airport by 50%26-02-2018
As Thorn lighting has released on its website, terminal 2 of the Hong Kong Airport underwent a renovation which has led to a reduction of 50% of the number of previously installed LED lighting fixtures in this area. The case was particularly difficult, because the Hong Kong Airport Authorities requested not only a significant reduction of lighting fixtures and thus substantial energy savings. Moreover the target was set to replace the existing LED fixtures by using indirect light to achieve high light uniformity and sufficient lux level.

The use of Thorn Lighting’s “HiPak” LED high bay lamp has eventually led to excellent results. Especially the high lumen output as well as an outstanding efficiency made it possible to replace two of the original LED lighting fixtures, leading to reduction of the total number of lighting fixtures by 50%. As Thorn Lighting stressed, at the same time a very stable color temperature has been guaranteed without any changes of the light even at the edges of the light beam.

During the project realization, Thorn Lighting constantly worked together with its client, providing a truly customized product to the Hong Kong Airport. The use of selected lens technology made it possible to ensure maximum lighting precision and minimum lighting waste. Over 700 fixtures with a CCT of 5000K have been installed very carefully, considering the high reflectance values of Hong Kong’s airport distinctive white ceiling structure. As a result, a pleasant environment was created for passengers as well as workers for the time when daylight fades.

The high bay fixtures are IP65-rated in order to protect them against dust and moisture and with an innovative internal fin heat sink design. The latter is particularly important as the high ceilings in the airport can mean high temperatures.

As the Hong Kong Airport Authorities stated, a reduction of energy consumption was expected, but the high lighting quality was the key point to confirm the decision to engage in this project. GM.
