Tridonic, part of the Zumtobel Group, headquarted in Dornbirm (Austria) has announced to close down the production facilities in Jennersdorf (Austria). The production facility was opened in the year 2001 as a centre of research, development and production and is now supposed to be completely closed down until January 2019.
Tridonic’s decision will lead to the dismissal of 90 employees. As the company stated, a staff of 30 professionals dedicated to the area of research and development will not be suspended. As Tridonic’s management stated, the decision was a painful, but inevitable step to bring back the company into a more profitable business. With Tridonic’s facility closing, one of the last producers of LED modules in Western Europe will have disappeared.
Tridonic’s decision to close down its facility in Austria comes at a time in which Zumtobel Group almost simultaneously has opened new production facilities in Serbia. Fierce competition, particularly in terms of pricing, has made this step inevitable for companies like Tridonic and others. With Tridonic as one of the last producers of LED modules and drivers in Western Europe closing down now, the trend of outsourcing the production to more cost-efficient locations like Eastern Europe is obvious.
Zumtobel’s new facilities in Nis (Serbia) in future will be dedicated to the mass production of LED modules and LED drivers, whilst technically more complex applications like tunable white-components for the flexible tuning of warm to cold white light will in future be produced at the Zumtobel’s headquarters facilities in Dornbirn (Austria). The facilities at Dornbirn as well concentrate on the production of high-class electronic appliances and LED remote control devices. sm.
