As Samsung has released, it has launched full-spectrum white-based horticultural LEDs to keep up with the trend of agriculture innovative agricultural lighting and application of LED lighting for smart farming like vertical farming.

An increasing world population, global warming and scarcity of resources has made vertical farming a new and feasible solution for the production of healthy and safe food. Recent years have subsequently seen a strong growth of smart LED lighting in vertical farming worldwide.

Vertical farming has become particular popular due to benefits like space saving, savings on water consumption, clean environment with limited usage of pesticides and reliable harvesting. As the growth of the plants and the plant’s photosynthesis depend on the light and wavelength the plant is exposed to, LED lighting offers unprecedented opportunities. With the choice of right wavelengths, not only the plant growth can be influenced very positively, but even the taste and nutrient quality.




As Professor Changhoo Chun, adviser to Samsung’s horticulture LED development and professor at College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University, said that Samsung’s white-based horticulture LEDs which blend RGB colors offered a wide spectrum of wavelengths, making it more effective in indoor framing.

He concluded, “Growing plants well comes down to providing the right combination of wavelengths specific to each type of plant – from vegetables to fruits to medicinal plants. However, finding the optimum for each type of produce is often time-consuming and costly – a difficult undertaking for most vertical farms.
