According to Osram’s press release from the 9
th of March, the company has decided to shut down server support for smart lamps from the Lightify lighting system within the next 18 months. As the company stated out more and more customers prefer comprehensive Smart Home solutions with intelligent assistants and are no longer controlling their lighting via a separate lighting control system or gateway.
Osram is the supplier of the Lightify platform and Ledvance the exclusive distributor of the Lightify gateway. Both companies have taken heed of this trend amongst end users and shut down the cloud server for controlling the Lightify gateway on August 31, 2021.
Ledvance finished selling the gateway at the start of 2019. As Osram pointed out Smart+ products from Ledvance are compatible with a large number of major Smart Home platforms and are optimized for control with intelligent assistants and will continue to work with these platforms.
Following Osram’s decision, customers have one and a half years to switch to an alternative smart-home platform where they can continue to use their smart lamps and luminaires under the ZigBee standard. As Osram finally pointed out with the sales of the household lamps business back in 2016 and the shutdown of the Lightify cloud server, the company is “continuing its journey to becoming a photonics company”gm.
