As Nichia has released on its website, the company has developed a dual function LED for general illumination and bacteria disinfection. As Nichia stated, the dual function LED that provides both white light and high doses of energy geared for inactivation of various prevalent bacteria.
COVID-19 and the global impact across the globe has created a heightened awareness to cleanliness in all aspects of life. While this certainly applies to viruses, it also applies to various types of bacteria present in our daily living environments.
Typical bacteria examples that cause infections are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, Escherichia coli (e-coli, O157) which causes food poisoning, continues to plague various parts of the world and remains problematic.
As Nichia furthermore explained, not only traditional UV-C and UV-B wavelengths of 200-380nm can be used for disinfection. It has recently been proven that also visible light with a a wavelenght range from 380-420nm has bacteria disinfection effects.
Nichia’s new NF2W585AR-P8 is an LED solution with a peak pump emission wavelength of 405nm. Through phosphor and die technology it is possible to achieve the balance between general white lighting and disinfection bacteria, all out of a single LED.
As Nichia finally stated, the company envisions this LED will be widely used for environmental hygiene maintenance in food factories, kitchens, hospitals, public facilities, and similar applications.sm.
