Rechargeable batteries in solar lighting18-04-2023
One of the most sensible topics when it comes to solar lighting is the quality of the battery. Being the most expensive component of a LED solar light, the battery is the part which essentially determines the price. Saying this, it is necessary to have a closer look to the main features of batteries used in solar lighting systems.

Non-rechargeable batteries like alkaline-based batteries are not suitable for solar lamps and should only be used in case of emergency and for a maximum time of up to one week, longer times will inevitably lead to a complete system failure.

Therrefore it is always necessary to use rechargeable batteries, especfically NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) or NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride)  batteries. The latter have a clear advantage over NiCd batteries in terms of capacity and can store twice more solar energy than standard NiCd batteries, resulting in better illumination and longer output times.

Last but not least NiMH batteries are environmentally friendly, contain no harmful elements and can be disposed of without polluting the environment. Contrary to this, NiCd batteries contain the hazardous element known as cadmium and must be disposed of properly.

As a rule of thumb, rechargeable batteries usually can last up to 1-2 years while high quality battiers may last up to 2-3 years. The performance of mostsolar batteries will start diminishing after one year which can be observed through a gradual decrease of brightness. Once the light output diminishes dramatically, the battery is at the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced.

The lifespan of a battery can be extended through proper maintenance. Firstly, switching off the LED light during long periods of cloudy, rainy weather to avoid battery damage. Secondly, store solar lights indoors during extremely cold periods of weather, ideally in place where there is sunglight. Finally, keep the solar panels clean by wiping them with a clean cloth at least once a month.
