LiFi Applications15-10-2024
As already covered in the last article, LiFi (Light Fidelity) offers new potential in different areas of application that could transform various industries. Li-Fi could replace or complement Wi-Fi in residential and business settings, providing high-speed internet with reduced interference and higher security. In healthcare settings, where radio frequencies can interfere with sensitive medical equipment, Li-Fi provides a safe and effective alternative for internet access and data transfer.

Since Li-Fi doesn’t cause electromagnetic interference, it can be used to provide in-flight internet access without interfering with aircraft controls.
Furthermore Li-Fi can connect smart streetlights, traffic signals, and public lighting systems, enabling fast and efficient data transfer for smart city infrastructure and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Even underwater communication can be enhanced through LiFi. Since radio waves don’t work well underwater, light can be modulated for short-range underwater communication, useful for submarines, divers, and underwater research. In schools and libraries, Li-Fi can be integrated into LED lighting systems to provide high-speed internet access, creating a seamless and efficient learning environment.

However, it has to be said that Li-Fi also comes with some shortcomings. It requires a direct line of sight between the transmitter (LED light) and the receiver and cannot penetrate walls. Need for LED Infrastructure: For widespread use, environments need to be equipped with Li-Fi-enabled LED lights, which might involve a significant initial investment.
Li-Fi is still in the early stages of development and deployment. While it may not entirely replace Wi-Fi, it can be an important complement, particularly in specialized environments where high-speed, secure, and interference-free connections are critical.
