LED flexible strip Voltages20-08-2025
Following repeated questions of our clients related to the Voltage of LED flexible strips, this article is meant to explain some basic purchasing guide. Flexible LED strips come typically in Voltages of 5, 12 and 24 VDC with each voltage variant having key differences in usage, performance, and quality.

5 Volt LED strips are often used for smaller DIY projects, PC cases, boats, caravans, or garden decorations. They have the shortest maximum run length (around 3 meters per roll) due to higher voltage drop and are safer to handle because of the low voltage. These strips have one LED per cuttable segment and tend to be more energy efficient but with shorter cutting lengths.

12 Volt LED strips are very common and widely used for residential and commercial lighting. They typically have a cuttable segment every 3 LEDs and a maximum run length of about 5 meters before voltage drop affects brightness noticeably. They require a 12V power supply and are versatile for kitchen bars, accent lighting, or medium-scale applications. 12V strips have moderate voltage drop and current requirements.

24V LED strips are preferred for longer runs (up to about 10 meters uninterrupted) and larger installations. They have longer cuttable segments (every 6 LEDs) and suffer less voltage drop due to lower current for the same power output, resulting in more consistent brightness along the strip. These are well-suited for home, office, outdoor, and commercial projects needing longer continuous lighting. 24V strips are also more energy efficient over longer distances.

As a summary it can be said that higher voltage strips (24V) allow longer continuous runs with less brightness
while lower voltage strips (5V) are safer, with more flexible cutting options but limited length.12V strips balance moderate length capability and easier integration with common power supplies.

Thicker copper layers, higher quality construction and of course high quality LED-SMDs in any voltage type can improve durability and heat dissipation.
