Constant Voltage power supply applications01-09-2025
Having examined the advantages  of constant current power supplies in a previous article, antother question of many purchasers refers to the advantages and usage of constant Voltage supples.

First of all, constant Volage supplies (CVs) are simpler in their design and therefore more cost-effective which is probably there foremost advantage. Regulating at a fixed Voltage is much more simple than varying output Voltage to maintain a stable current as constant current power supplies have to do.

Constant Voltage power supplies are ideal for LED Strips and LED modulesodules: that have built-in resistors to regulate current, allowing easy parallel connections and variable lengths. For that reason one of the best recommendations for purchasers of e.g, flexible LED strips is to check the type, size and number of built-in resistors on the PCB.

Another advantage of CVs is their flexibility in installation, they allow for straightforward wiring and length customization by simply cutting e.g. LED flexible strip or adding more strips in parallel without complex current balancing. Moreover, they are compatible with many consumer LED products and easy to swap without matching specific current ratings.

Fixed Voltage for Electronic Devices: CV supplies provide a stable voltage required by many general electronic components and devices, ensuring safe and consistent operation. Consequently, there is a lower risk of overvoltage damage and reduced risk of damaging devices that expect a stable voltage input.

CVs are most commonly appoied in residential and decorative LED strip lighting where ease of installation and flexibility are priorities and commercial and retail display lighting where LED strips and modules can be used for accent and ambient lighting. Another typical field of usage are consumer electronics and small appliances where devices that require a regulated voltage supply and low to medium power lED Lighting where series connection and tight current control are less critical.

This contrasts with constant current power supplies, which excel in high-power, precise LED applications requiring exact current control for series LED chains. In summary, constant voltage power supplies are easier and cheaper but require LED loads to have proper current regulation and may be less efficient or cause uneven lighting in some setups. They are best suited for LED strips and modules designed with internal resistors to control current, rather than high-power or series LED applications.
