Resurrecting the Nelson Mandela Bridge26-12-2025
One of the most amazing LED project in 2025 was the transformation of Johannesburg’s Nelson Mandela Bridge. Years of vandalism had destroyed 98% of the bridge’s glass railings and cables,  luminaires were stolen. After dark, the iconic landmark had become a dangerous place that residents avoided.

The solution came in record time. In just three weeks, Ledvance rebuilt the lighting infrastructure from scratch. The team installed 610 solar-powered LED streetlight luminaires, each delivering 11.000 lumens from a 60 Watt fixture. Critically, two structural engineers had to certify that the bridge could bear the additional 14 kg weight of each unit.

An amazing effecte what the following energy independence. Given Johannesburg’s frequent power outages, the system uses dual-sided solar panels to maximize charging even in a dense urban skyline. The luminaires can operate for up to three nights without recharging.

Anti-theft innovation was another important feature. Every fixture contains a real-time tracking module that triggers an instant alarm if theft is attempted, backed by protective grids and a secured control room.

Furthermore the aesthetic impact played a crucial role. Dutch lighting specialist OneEightyOne contributed RGB illumination with an 8° beam angle, individually highlighting each suspension cable to create a stunning nighttime cityscape. Today, when the power grid fails across Johannesburg, the Nelson Mandela Bridge often remains the city’s only brightly lit landmark.
